Introducing Human Subjects Review: Research Determination & Risk Assessment

This guide contains policies, procedures, forms, and other helpful resources for human subjects research review at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Important Documents

If you are a DMin or PhD student conducting dissertation research involving human subjects, you are required to submit a Research Determination Form along with the Risk Assessment Rubric to the Human Subjects Committee (HSC). The Research Determination Form will help you and the HSC determine whether your proposed research project meets the specific definition of research with human subjects (see the form below). The Research Risk Assessment Rubric determines the type and extent of risk a proposed research project entails for human subjects. The HSC is the body that makes this determination.

If you are conducting human subjects research as defined by the Office of Human Research Projections (OHRP) and your Risk Assessment Rubric shows all items in the "minimal risk" category, you only need to submit this form along with the Risk Assessment Rubric to the HSC. You will then await a determination from the HSC as to whether you will need to complete the full Human Subjects Review. In all other cases, you are required to complete and submit the full Human subjects Review to the HSC.
