To commemorate Women’s History Month (March), the Styberg Library presents this digital exhibit on the theme “Nevertheless She Persisted.” Focusing on pioneering women of Garrett Biblical Institute (GBI), the Chicago Training School (CTS), Evangelical Theological Seminary (ETS), and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary (G-ETS), the exhibits will feature photos, writings, and artifacts from the library’s archives and regular collection pertaining to women of vision, strength and conviction in our institutional history. These include Eliza Garrett (founding benefactor of GBI), Mary A. Phillips (the first woman to earn a theological degree from GBI in 1879), Lucy Rider Meyer (founder and principal of CTS), Ruth Kraemer (library director at ETS), Ethel Payne (one of the few African American alums of CTS who went on to become a nationally acclaimed journalist), Georgia Harkness (the first woman faculty member of GBI), Isabelle Horton (CTS faculty member and author of a biography of Lucy Rider Meyer) and women of the Deaconess Movement such as Ellen Hibbard, Mary Jefferson, and Isabelle Reeves, the three members of the first two classes (1889/1890) of graduate deaconesses.
