MTS Research & Writing Guide: Using Library

This guide provides a library research and writing guide for MTS degree students at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary.

Checking Out Items

The Styberg Library holds about 350,000 physical items, including books, journals, DVDs, CDs, and more. You can check out many of these materials. In addition, you have access to millions of other items through the Northwestern University Libraries. You can also check out materials from other theological schools in Chicago and across the United States. Check the links below for more information.

Printing, Copying & Scanning Materials

The Styberg Library has several printers and scanners available to use. To learn about printing, copying, and scanning, check out the link below. Or, stop by the library anytime for assistance.

Reserving Library Space

The Group Study Room (Lower Level) and Ott Reading Lounge (First Floor of Stead Hall) are available for reservations, which can be made for up to two hours per day. The rooms can be used longer if there are no other reservations.

Using Interlibrary Loan

When you find a resource that the Styberg Library does not own, you can request a loan or scan through Interlibrary Loan. If you need a chapter or article, submit a scan request. If you need an entire book, submit a book request. Please note that we do not request items that are required for courses, and we cannot mail Interlibrary Loan books to you. For more information, see the links below.

Using Course Reserves

Each academic term, the Styberg Library places all required textbooks on reserve. This includes physical and electronic resources. Physical materials can be used for 2 hours in the library, while electronic materials have various loan lengths. Check out the links below for more information.

Requesting Items

The Styberg Library offers a variety of "requesting items" services. If you are uncomfortable or unable to enter the library, you can request items for curbside pickup.
