Rare Bibles: Geneva Bible (1583)

The Styberg Library has a special collection of rare Bibles. This guide features some of the ones that are within the collection.

About

Due to great popularity, the Geneva Bible went through more than 120 editions before the King James Bible was published in 1611. This edition of the Geneva Bible was published in 1583. The Apocrypha was included in the Geneva Bible, until around 1600, when it was removed by the Puritans who were suspect of the deuterocanonical writings. The 1583 was apparently issued in two different installments, with the Old and New Testament published separately. This copy is a complete bible bound together and includes the Apocrypha. Our copy was donated in 2013 by the Hon. and Mrs. John Baker, one of Garrett-Evangelical’s trustees. The text contains various woodcuts and engravings throughout.
